Structure
The members of Pro Bono Québec are the Quebec Bar, the bar sections in the various regions of Quebec, the “young” bars (lawyers in practise 10 years or less) and the lawyers and law firms who have signed Pro Bono Québec’s Founding Agreement (in French only) or pledged a set number of hours to the virtual bank of pro bono hours.
The Board of Directors of Pro Bono Québec is composed of the following:
- Five (5) lawyers from law firms that are active members. These lawyers are elected at the annual meeting for a renewable term of one (1) year.
- One (1) Legal Aid lawyer elected at the annual meeting for a renewable term of one (1) year.
- Three (3) lawyers chosen by the Quebec Bar, one of whom is the president of the Quebec Bar or his or her representative. They are appointed for a renewable term of one (1) year.
- Three (3) other people appointed by the Board of Directors. They include a representative of the general public and are appointed for a renewable term of one (1) year.
- Three (3) judges named by the magistracy (other judges) for a renewable term of one (1) year. These judges act as observers and do not have the right to vote.
Applications for free legal services received by Pro Bono Québec are reviewed by the organization’s Pro Bono Approval and Referral Committee.
